Postgresql Gapless Sequence, Nov 1, 2015 · Question: Is there any way to reclaim the lost sequence values, or prevent the failed function from incrementing the index? I know that there are alternative ways to mitigate this potential problem, but I am still curious. . Jul 22, 2015 · Sequences do not generate gap-free sets of numbers, and there's really no way of making them do that because a rollback or error will "use" the sequence number. These only ever increase, and they're exempt from the usual transaction rollback rules to permit multiple transactions to grab new IDs at the same time. Thus, PostgreSQL sequence objects cannot be used to obtain “gapless” sequences. It is possible to build gapless assignment by using exclusive locking of a table containing a counter; but this solution is much more expensive than sequence objects, especially if many transactions need sequence numbers concurrently. Likewise, sequence state changes made by setval are immediately visible to other transactions, and are not undone if the calling transaction rolls back. Gapless sequence example in PostgreSQL.
